“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.“ – Rev 3:20
Thank God we heard Jesus when he knocked at the door of our heart. I know you can agree with me that accepting Jesus as your savior was the “best thing that ever happened to you.”
Gladys Knight sings a song with these very words however she isn’t referring to our Lord and savior, Jesus. Will you agree with me that Jesus is the best thing that could ever happen? When he knocked, and when we had an ear to hear him, we opened the door.
He knocked because even He had to have permission to enter in. God made the sovereign decision when He originally created man to create us with Free Will. We can literally ‘choose’ to do anything. God made the choice to bind Himself with an oath that He would never step over our right to choose. Being free will agents, He politely waits until we respond to Him with a ‘yes’. In that moment the door was opened and we granted Him permission.
When we responded with ‘yes’, it gave him legal access to our lives. He has a legal right by His own oath to come into our hearts and have fellowship with us. With our choice of ‘yes’, He has a legal right to lead and guide us into the things of His Kingdom and the fulness of His Love.
On another note, Satan also has to have permission before he can wage war against us. He and his cohorts are ever scanning the horizon of our lives looking for an open door where we may have given him permission to come into our lives and attack.
1 Pet 5:8 warns us to…
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”
We are further admonished in verse 9,
“Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.”
Satan’s tricks never change. He lost his creative nature when he fell from Heaven. He can only twist, pervert or counterfeit the truth. He can only offer a poor similitude of the real things of God. We are to be on guard at all times…
“Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.” He listens to what we say as well as watches what we do. Always prowling around trying to find an entrance into our lives to cause us havoc.” – 2 Co 2:11
One of the earliest Christian books I ever read had to do with the tongue and the words we speak. This book changed my life. The premises was taken from Proverbs 18:21, which states:
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
Satan is NOT omnipresent. I began to see how I had been giving Satan legal access to my life through frivolous, careless and fruitless speech. My Words were opening the door for him and giving him permission to walk right in and intrude upon my life.
In order to counter act past actions, repentance needs to come forth. Give yourself over to more study in compliance as it says in Rom 12:2:
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
The only way we will ever be able to change old habits is by the power of God, submitting to His Word, and by praying in the Spirit. God is so faithful to quicken within our spirits whenever we miss the mark. In that moment, repent and immediately speak words that are life giving. As we do so, Satan will no longer have legal access to enter into the door of our heart and life.
Open the door wide to the Lord. But remember… Satan can knock, but you don’t have to open your door!
