Recognizing the spirit of Divination in operation within the church.
So…. What is the spirit of divination? How does it manifest?
It is any applied demonic activity, influence or strategy from the spirit world used to gain an ungodly advantage over others. It is an occult practice and technique which is very subtle and very evil.
The spirit of Divination often manifests in the church by someone operating under the guise of ‘hearing’ from God. This practice is most often associated with people who try to take unfair advantage of one another. It can also occur when a person attempts to gain some type of unnatural influence over them from a position of authority.
Sadly many who operate in this falsehood do not understand that they are in agreement with Satan and are merely tools performing his will. This is not a new concept. This spirit has been operating since the beginning. In the Garden of Eden, Satan appears to Adam and Eve and uses crafty words to twist and gain influence over them. He appeals to their lust of wanting to be ‘as gods’. How do we know that lust was within their hearts? Well, for starters, Satan cannot temp and draw you away if something is not within your heart. The fact that they yielded to the enemy is proof that the desire to be ‘as gods’ was in their hearts.
“And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” – Gen 3:4-5
Here, Satan lied in order to gain authority over them. However, he was only able to do so because of the lust for power that was already in their hearts.
“But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.“ – Jas 1:14
We must remember that Satan is not omnipresent nor omnipotent. Neither are his hordes or imps. He only knows things about us through studying our actions, inclinations and generational observations. After careful study and observations, he or his imps plan strategies of attack in order to try and tempt us.
Another example of the Spirit of Divination in operation is found with the Prophet Balaam. He was willing to curse God’s people for financial gain.
“Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed. And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.” – Num 22:6 -7
Paul refers to Balaam and anyone who would use occult practices to gain influence and financial gain in the following scriptures;
“Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man’s voice forbad the madness of the prophet. “ – 2 Pe 2:15.-16
In Acts 16, there is the story of the servant girl who brought much financial gain to her masters by operating in the spirit of divination. (Acts 16:16-19). This set of scriptures shows us that this spirit can operate comfortably in the presence of Godly people. It even operates today in many Houses of Worship and at the very altar of God. One must be astute in the Word and in tune with the Spirit of God in order to quickly spot it when it is in operation. We implore you to never be in agreement with it or fall under its influence.
In the scriptural reference on Acts 16, the girl is doing and saying all the right things. On the way to prayer, she is saying…
“These men are the servants of the most high God, which show us the way to Salvation! ” – Acts 16:17
There is nothing wrong with her going to prayer and speaking about them leading people to the Lord. But, Apostle Paul sensed something was not right about her spirit. He eventually cast out the evil spirit.
Consider these scriptures:
“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” -2 Co 11:13 -15
Often times, there may not be in the actual exchange of dollars. It can also be seen through the misuse of another person’s resources. An example might be, when someone is constantly putting themselves into a position to receive a ‘blessing’. We are talking about the artificial creation of an appearance of ‘need’. It could even be as subtle as always having a legitimate need but having a constant expectation of others to fill it rather than God. Their trust is in ‘man’ to supply their need rather than God. In those moments that person is being drawn away from God by their own lusts. In those moments they have substituted ‘other people’ for God and in essence, lifted them up as idols. Those people knowingly or unknowingly, are operating in, and under the influence of, the spirit of Divination.
Unfortunately, the spirit of Divination is rampant within many churches today. So many times, we see it manifest in the area of finances or anything considered as ‘ill-gotten gain’. Saints should never be forced to give to God and His Church because of the use of strong armed tactics. Temptations should never be presented to God’s people in order to get them to ‘give’. Temptations should never be presented to God’s people in order for them to get ‘a Word’ or ‘a Blessing’.
One must be led of the Spirit of God and alert. We are reminded by the scriptures which tell us..
“Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.” – 2 Co 2:11
Let us be on guard to make sure our motives are pure. Let us be vigilant to make sure that our eyes are on the Lord and not on man.
We, the children of God, are to be led by His Spirit and not our flesh.
